Bel Canto Chorus is a premier all-girl choir based in Nairobi, Kenya, renowned for its captivating performances and diverse repertoire. Founded by the visionary musicians Dr. Abby Chokera and Ken Mulwa, both esteemed figures in the Kenyan music community, with a mission to create a platform for young women to express themselves through music. Their dedication and passion have been instrumental in shaping the choir into a beacon of musical excellence. The choir is composed of 16 talented young women with an average age of 24. Our dynamic group of singers brings a vibrant energy to every performance, embracing a wide variety of musical genres, from African folk songs to classical compositions.
Our Directors
Bel Canto Chorus thrives under the expert guidance of three distinguished directors:
- Antony Muriuki: An accomplished organist and conductor, Antony brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of choral music to the choir.
- Joseph Njoroge: A talented flautist, conductor, and composer, Joseph’s innovative approach and creative compositions enrich the choir’s performances.
- Mariah Gichu: A professional soprano, Mariah’s exceptional vocal prowess and teaching skills inspire and elevate the choir’s vocal quality.
Special Mentorship
We are honored to regularly host Dr. Scott Glysson, the head of choral activities at Cal Poly University in the USA. Dr. Glysson was awarded the ACDA International Conducting Fellowship to Kenya in 2017 and has since been a vital part of our journey. He serves as a clinician and co-founder of the bi-annual Nairobi Choral Conducting Workshop, providing invaluable mentorship and fostering a deeper understanding of choral techniques.
